The Dent Trooper — mobile paintless dent repair
Guide

Is paintless dent repair worth it?

Short answer: if your paint is intact, yes — almost always. Here is exactly how it works, what it costs, where it beats a body shop, and the cases where it isn't the right fix.

What paintless dent repair actually is

Paintless dent repair (PDR) removes dents by working the metal back to its original shape from behind the panel. A technician reaches the back of the dent with specialized rods, then massages the low spot out in small, controlled movements while reading the reflection on the surface.

Nothing is sanded, filled or sprayed. When it's done, the panel wears the same factory paint it left the assembly line with — which is the entire point.

So, is it worth it?

For dents with intact paint, PDR wins on nearly every measure that matters:

  • Save money. PDR costs a fraction of conventional body shop repair because there is no paint, filler or blending.
  • No body-shop drop-off. Jobs range from 30 minutes to more than six hours, but your car stays with you. No loaner car, no waiting room.
  • Keep your factory paint. No fillers, no bondo, no repainting, and nothing to disclose on a Carfax report.
  • Convenient and mobile. We come to your driveway, your office parking lot or wherever the car sits.

The one thing PDR asks of you is honesty about the damage. Send clear photos and a technician can tell you in minutes whether it's a candidate.

What does dent repair cost?

Our repairs start at $160. The final number depends on four things: the size and depth of the dent, where it sits on the panel, how much we have to remove to reach behind it, and how many dents you have.

A single door ding on a flat panel is at the low end. A crease along a body line, or a dent behind a brace, takes longer and prices higher. Multiple dents on the same visit are cheaper per dent than booking them separately.

See what makes a door ding a good repair candidate.

We won't guess a price over the phone — photos are the honest way to do it. Send yours through the estimate form and we'll text back a firm price, usually the same day.

When paintless dent repair won't work

We'll tell you up front if your damage isn't a fit. PDR is not the answer when:

  • The paint is cracked, chipped or scraped to primer or bare metal.
  • The metal is stretched or torn from a hard impact.
  • The dent sits on a sharp edge or double-layered seam we can't reach.
  • The panel is plastic and has cracked rather than flexed.

In those cases the panel needs paint work, and we'd rather point you elsewhere than take on a repair we can't finish properly.

Hail damage and insurance claims

Insurers recognize PDR as a legitimate repair method, and it's common for customers to file a claim after hail or a minor parking-lot incident. Because PDR is cheaper than conventional repair, it often keeps a claim under a deductible entirely — worth checking before you file.

If you do file, our office can communicate directly with your insurance company so you aren't stuck relaying estimates back and forth.

Photo estimate

Photos that get an accurate price

A few good pictures tell us the panel, the paint and the shape of the dent before we quote it.

Send these photos

It takes about 60 seconds: your name, phone number, your car's year, make and model, and a few photos of the dent.

No account, no payment info — and if we need a better photo, we'll tell you exactly what to take.

Show the whole panel

Stand far enough back that we can tell which door, fender, hood or quarter panel is dented.

Add several close-ups

Take each close-up from a slightly different angle so we can judge the depth and shape of the dent.

Use daylight

Soft daylight and a low angle make shallow dents, creases and the condition of the paint easier to see.

Paintless repair requires intact paint. If the dent is creased through the paint, chipped, scraped or part of a heavily damaged panel, send the photos anyway — we will tell you honestly whether PDR is the right repair.

The short version

If the paint is intact, paintless dent repair costs less, takes hours instead of days, happens in your driveway, and leaves nothing for a future buyer to question. That's why it's the default choice for door dings, hail and creases.

Questions

Common questions about PDR

If the paint is intact — no cracks, chips or scrapes down to primer — there is a very good chance we can repair it. Door dings, creases, hail dings and larger dents on a smooth panel are all candidates. Send photos from a few angles and we will tell you honestly either way.
